Modern wood-burning technology can convert
up to 90% of the energy content of the fuel
to useful heat. Most modern equipment is
designed to use either chipped or pelleted
wood-fuel. These fuels are easier to
transport and handle than logs and more
importantly, can be fed automatically into
the boiler or stove – meaning less hassle
and mess.
Burning wood and other biomass as a fuel is
classed as carbon neutral; plants and trees
remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
when they are growing, and release the same
amount when they burn or decompose naturally
on the forest floor. In contrast, fossil
fuels like oil, gas and coal, release carbon
dioxide which has been locked away for
millions of years and increase atmospheric
CO2 levels, the main cause of global
warming. Rural Generation grows SRC (Short
Rotation Coppice) Willow on its plantations
(3,000 hectares) and converts it in to a
woody biomass fuel. The advantage of willow
is that it is a fast growing wood species
thereby providing fuel security for all our
biomass installations.
The most important consideration in
providing wood heat is the quality of the
wood. We dry our chip to below 20% thereby
guaranteeing the user a minimum of 3,600kw
Hours per tonne of chip. This guarantee
ensures that the user is not burning water
with no heat benefit. In addition we grade
the chip ensuring the smooth and
efficient running of the boiler feed
systems.
We are prepared to sell chip per tonne to
the consumer but are also prepared to enter
into a heat contract providing heat (not
fuel) to the user, this options take away
the quality issue from the consumer and of
course means the consumer only pays for
their usage (like you currently pay for
electricity)
