September 2010 - Rural Generation
have signed a long term contract with
Standard Brands to provide up to 5,000
tonnes of Willow chip per annum to the
Standard Brands “Fire Log” making factory in
Castlebellingham. Standard Brands are the
market leaders in ignition products, owning
such brands as Zip Fire lighters, Sunny Jim
Fire lighters and of course the Zip fire
Log. Standard Bands have invested in a state
of the art assembly line for log production
over the first half of this year, moving
production of the log from Holland back to
Ireland and using locally grown sustainable
wood supply through willow. Standard Brands
choose the willow route because they want to
reduce the carbon foot print of their log,
enhance the sustainability of the raw
material and provide a guaranteed Irish
product. Standard Brands and Rural
Generation are joining together to offer
Irish farmers a genuine business opportunity
– growing and harvesting willow – Irelands
native biomass fuel. As well as providing
clean, sustainable, carbon neutral energy,
short rotation coppice willow also provides
genuine business opportunities for Irish
farmers and their local partners. This is
not only helping Ireland environmentally -
but also creating and sustaining jobs during
an increasingly challenging time. Rural
Generation are offering Farmers a contact to
purchase all their willow chip (Wet or Dry)
over the long term. Farmers can expect to
yield 20 wet tonne (10 dry tonnes) per
hectare per annum. Rural Generation are also
are also offering an incentive to the first
farmers wishing to commence growing willow,
as well as offering the security of demand,
both as biomass fuel and use in the
production of Croi na Tine, the Zip firelog
which is the first log to be produced in
Ireland and using Irish willow as a key
ingredient.
