RECYCLING OF EFFLUENT
We work in collaboration with Laqua
Treatment AB of Sweden to develop
bio-filtration systems suitable for:
Sewage treatment effluent
Dirty water from agri-food
businesses
Leachates from landfiills
A typical system consists of a
settlement or aeration tank from
which effluent is filtered and
pumped out onto a willow plantation
via pressure equalised irrigation
equipment.
The effluent is distributed over the
field using irrigation pipes laid
above ground. The rate of flow is
controlled by a computer management
system linked to solenoid valves in
the field. This effectively creates
zones within the irrigation area so
that different rates can be applied
to different areas depending upon
site conditions to ensure best
possible percolation and
biofiltration.
To ensure that this method of water
purification is economically viable,
the most suitable scenario is to set
up the willow plantation and
automated pressure compensated
irrigation system as close to the
treatment site as physically
possible. The next best set-up is to
pump the effluent a limited distance
to the site; up to approximately
2Km.
