DISTRICT HEATING
The term district heating describes the
linking of properties back to one central
boiler or boiler room. This may be simply
two properties heated by one small boiler,
to a large number of properties heated by
one central heating plant.
District heating networks are usually owned
by one landlord, but it is becoming more
common to provide a network to heat a number
of properties under separate ownership.
Biomass boilers are often linked to
district heating systems because:
The high capital cost of biomass
heating plant can be spread
across a larger number of
properties, increasing annual
heat load and so making savings
overall and reducing the payback
period.
The fuel storage element of
biomass heating can be difficult
to integrate; therefore a
central boiler plant allows
smaller properties to benefit.

In some circumstances it may be
necessary, due to fuel delivery
constraints, planning constraints, or
aesthetic reasons, to house the boiler plant
away from the buildings to be heated.
