Over the last number of
years, Rural
Generation has been
pioneering the recycling of
organic sludges and
effluents to short rotation
willow coppice. The willow
wood chip produced is
subsequently a low carbon
renewable energy resulting
from the recycled organic
waste. The biofiltration
process takes the nutrients
out of the waste streams
reducing the levels of
pollutants in the
environment.
Rural Generation Ltd has
worked for several years on
the bio-filtration of sludge
(sewage sludge cake or
industrial sludges) by
willow plantations. To carry
out this process, bespoke
trailers are filled at the
treatment works, covered
with tarpaulin and taken to
willow establishments. The
trailer tips the sludge into
an auger. Deodoriser is
applied as it transfers from
the trailer to the auger.
The sludge is then augered
into a bespoke injector
trailer. The injection
trailer is towed behind a
tractor through the field.
The trailer cuts a track in
the ground, between the
newly harvested willows and
a screw augers the sludge
into the trench and discs on
the trailer fold the soil
over the sludge. Finally the
trailer wheels role over the
covered injection trough
completely covering and
sealing the sludge under the
soil surface.
With the introduction of
tighter EU Legislation and
Regulation, it is becoming
more and more difficult and
yet increasingly important
for waste producers to
dispose of their waste in a
compliant and
environmentally sound
manner.
