Dr John Gilliland OBE - founder and
Chair, is highly regarded, respected and
recognised globally for his vision and
leadership in the areas of sustainable
development.
From 2002-2004, John was President of
the Ulster Farmers’ Union. In 2005 he
was appointed as N. Ireland Sustainable
Development Commissioner, and asked to
chair the DEFRA Rural Climate Change
Forum. He presented the N. Ireland
Sustainable Development Strategy to the
United Nations, in New York, and then
completed an International Visitors’
Leadership Programme on Sustainable
Development, as a guest of the US
Government. In 2007, John and Rural
Generation were invited to represent N.
Ireland at an exhibition at the
Smithsonian Institute’s annual folk life
festival in Washington. He was also
appointed as a non-Executive Director of
the Scottish Agriculture College.

Christine Hutton has worked in the
Biomass Heat sector for the past 4 years
and has gained a wealth of knowledge in
this area. she is highly experienced in
preparing feasibility reports for
clients and advising them not only of the
potential savings involved in a biomass
heat solution but also in calculating
carbon savings and assisting clients in
securing financial support.
Christine is involved in a number of
advisory committees. she was an advisor
to the Western Development Commission
for three years and is currently a
member of the wood fuel quality
assurance scheme oversight committee.
Christine also gives presentations at
renewables education workshops aimed at
educating installers and those
interested in biomass heat. The most
recent of these was in February 2010
when she supported the Carbon Zero N.I.
programme.

Chris Johnston has now worked in the
industry for the past 5 years and has
gained a wealth of knowledge in this
area. He has an Honours degree in
Microbiology from Edinburgh University
and a Masters degree in Food &
Agricultural Biotechnology from Reading
University. He is experienced in
preparing farm nutrient management plans
for clients and advising them on the use
of organic waste as cost effective and
efficient fertiliser. Chris also works
with commercial clients assessing their
effluent and sludge waste and advising
them on the most environmentally
sustainable and efficient way of
recycling them. Chris has experience in
designing, building and operating
effluent irrigation systems in North
America, Europe and United Kingdom. The
company, under Chris' guidance, has
consulted on sludge and effluent
recycling for organisations such as the
Canadian Government, Northern Ireland
Water, Veolia Water, Ireland County
Councils, Dale Farm Dairies, Lakelands
Diaries, and Linwoods Foods.
